I was looking at this issue recently and ran across a racing web site that explained how to read plugs. It had pictures of various heat ranges that were too hot or cold for the cars they were in. When the heat range is right, there will be a very slight color change about half way up the ground electrode arm. The BoschUSA site has some good pics of plug problems but I have never seen this line as well defined as their "correct" picture.
