I have been carrying a spare DIC (ICM) in the trunk for a couple of years. 99 9-3SE, slushbox, so LPT. ABout 76k mi and doing just great. I stop to throw all the year end (I teach high school) stuff into the recycling bins. Try to restart & it cranks & cranks with no sign of catching. Classic hot plastic smell in the engine bay. Time to replace the DIC. There were no codes or CEL. Only about 60°F outside.
The 4 Torx® bolts came out fine, but how the hell to get that wiring harness off the old unit. I finally broke down & called thd dlr. He said to just pull it up from the bottom. That was obvioulsly not going to work & I specifically asked about the red parts of the connector.
On that model (T5) the connector has a red plastic lock. You pull up the side that is one piee & then slide it out about a quarter to half inch. The connector then pulls right out of the old DIC.
I recommend highly that you practice this once in your driveway before you need to replace the DIC.
Now I need to find another cheap used DIC to keep in the trunk!
