Those hoses certainly do fail, I replaced one of mine on my 1995 900S a couple of years ago. Once you lose your refrigerant, your a/c will not start, as the low pressure switch will prevent it. You should be able to verify that the system is empty by doing the following check: You should see a plastic screw-on cap on the a/c line near the battery. With the engine stopped, remove the cap, and CAREFULLY and BRIEFLY depress the schrader valve slightly with a screwdriver or something similar. If no refrigerant escapes, the system is discharged. As far as the black grime, hopefully it's just compressor oil your seeing, else you might have what's known as "Black Death" in the world of automotive a/c. Not good. Read about it here:
