Although my 1998 900SET came stock with 205/50-16 tires, I have always used 205/55-6 size as the replacement tires. I believe the 2002 9-3 came with 205/55-16 tires as stock.
First of all, the 205/55-16 gives a little more sidewall height (0.4 inches to be exact)which gives a slightly smoother ride and helps protect the rims from big potholes.
Secondly, there are many more choices in 205/55-16 than 205/50-16 in the some tire categories like all-season tires.
I have had no problems with the tires rubbing or tire clearance. I have hear that if the plastic fuel filler neck is not located properly in the upper monting bracket it may rub on the tire when under load. This is easily checked and corrected if necessary.
