If you pull an NG900 clutch cable, does it make noise?

I was poking around under the hood and I pulled at the clutch cable from down at the bare end on top of the tranny. There is a fair amount of clicking & creaking from the area up by the fire wall when I do that. Is this the normal action of the self adjuster or does it indicate fraying inside and "replacement time" ? (Operation is smooth otherwise).
