... then, yes, that was almost certainly problem. It's been my experience that batteries fail very suddenly and that you usually have little or no warning. When a battery is under load and it has a damaged cell, it creates a tremendous amount of heat as it tries to expend the amount of energy that is being demanded. Basically the damaged cell no longer produces any more power, so, the remaining (typically ailing) cells overload themselves. This overloading creates a great deal of heat, just like if you're trying to drill a hole with a cordless drill that is nearly discharged. The battery heats up in a similar way.
As for the DIC theory, only the Turbos of that vintage have them. Your car has a normal distributor, coil, and plug wires (sticking out of the front, driver's side corner of the valve cover).
I believe your car does have a CPS, but, that has nothing to do with the symptoms you related regarding the other electrical failures (locks, rapid clicking, etc.). Actually, the more I read your post, you've experienced a classic battery failure.
I'd be very surprised if it was something else. But, of course, please do keep us posted.
