Expermentation complete! You can avoid the dealer/TechII for an instrument cluster change and have the correct miles regardless of how many are on the instrument cluster you swap in. The mileage settings are stored in a chip in the rear of the cluster and can be swapped form old to new.
NOTE 1: VERY IMPORTANT - disconnect the battery like it says in the instructions before doing the swap. If you don't you will likely set off the SRS light and will need a TechII to reset that. Trust me, I experimenteed with this too... just disconnnect first!
OK... here it is.... all you have to do is swap the rear of the old unit onto the rear of the replacement unit. Since it is most always the meters themselves that go bad and not the solid state electronics this will most always work.
Step by step:
0. Spend 1- 2 hours removing the everything around the instrument cluster. See Haynes manual for more detail.
1. Pull out the old cluster
2. Remove the rear section as if you were going to change some bulbs (just take out the screws that hold the rear section to the front section).
3. Carefully disconnect the 5 wiring connectors. They just pull out but go slow so you do not damage the connector or wires.
4. Do steps 1 & 2 to the replacement unit.
5. Plug the old rear unit's connectors into the new front unit
6. Reattach the screws.
7. All done. Install new unit, button it up.
