Yes and no. If you're willing to invest a few hundred dollars in the proper equipment, including a generic a/c service manual, it can be done. That's what I have done, as having four cars in the family has made it worthwhile to do so. At the very least, you'll need a vaccum pump to evacuate the system (remove all air and moisture) and a set of service gages. If you're up to this, then you might as well change the compressor yourself also, as that doesn't take any more mechanincal know-how than a proper evac. and recharge. You also may want to change the drier while you're at it, although that isn't usually necessary if the a/c system is only open to the atmosphere for a brief period during the compressor swap.
I would avoid having one shop change the compressor and another do the evac. and recharge. Any shop that will only change the compressor and not recharge is not a place to have your a/c serviced.
