Darn Front Brake Caliper Retainers!

I replaced the front brakes on the wife's '99 9-3. I used OEM pads, Brembo rotors, and new retainers. Everything went smooth until the test drive. After driving a few blocks, I'd have a big dead spot before the car would brake. A quick repeated pump of the pedal, and it would be nice and firm. I bled the entire system, so I knew it wasn't that. The pedal would be firm...once the pads "grabbed". Having worked on a lot of different brake systems, I knew the problem was the caliper was getting pulled "outward", and the piston was being pushed in slowly. This was causing the first 1/2 of pedal travel to push the piston back out before any effective braking took place. My only guess was the spring retainer on the caliper. I had no problem getting this on, and figured out a good trick to "roll" it into place. It was evenly centered, inserted in the holes, and looked ok. So....several "tweaks" were required to the spring retainer to keep it from pulling on the caliper. It was incredibly frustrating to have to keep lifting the car, removing the wheels, and messing around with this thing.
Anyone else have trouble with the retainer causing these problems?? Any tricks to this, or did others have to tweak theirs a bit too?? All other aspects of the brake job went smooth, and relatively quickly.
