Last night I pulled the kayak rack off, as I'm driving to Boston from Vermont tomorrow, and figured I'd save some gas. Filled up, and surprisingly was getting 32/33 on the highway on my way to work. That is still with a thule rack with fairing on.
I find that the sweet spot for good mpg is going 70, maybe pushing 75, keeping the tack under 3000rpm.
Otherwise, I was pulling my hobie cat the other day, and was getting a great 18 mpg on the highway!
Oh, and I use the good gas. 93 octane.
