Ok, one thing at the time.
You say that "low coolant" message comes on now and then but when you check the level (cold) it is right where it should be?
If so, the level sending unit is bad. Unfortunatly, the sending unit cannot be bought seperatly so you have to buy the whole expansion tank.
If the coolant level IS NOT going low in the expansion tank, the smell of coolant is probably old coolant lingering on the block from the last hose blow out.
The high temp gauge reading could be a stuck coolant thermostat or the temp sending unit in end of cylinder head.
