My DI casette finally gave out yesterday at 94K in my '99 9-3. The failure of my car to start was quickly followed by a burning smell. Luckily I had the spare in my trunk that I have been lugging around for 2.5 years. The car was running great yesterday morning, and I didn't pick up on any symptoms.
My biggest disapointment was that this happened in my driveway on a perfect VT summer day. I had always imagined that I would need to replace it on the side of the road in the middle of the night during a snow storm or something. Then I would have calmly pulled it out of my trunk and been up and running again in moments, showing my wife how smart and prepared I am. Alas, that was not the case.
I still feel smart though, and am glad I took the advice everybody on this board. Now the question is, how long to wait before I get another spare for the trunk? I feel a little unprepared.
