1995 900 SE convertible top won't respond

I bought my 1995 convertible about 3.5 months ago (came here asking questions before I bought it - thanks, all). The top has worked more often than not, usually without a hitch. But occasionally it would not go down.
Whenever that happened, I would turn off the engine, set the brake, latch/un-latch, etc. A myriad of things, and then it would usually go down.
Well, now I haven't been able to get the top down in 2+ weeks, which was okay for a while because of the heat wave and humidity. But now the weather has finally moderated and I want it down. THAT'S WHY I bought a CONVERTIBLE! Anyway, I'm getting no messages, no whirring, buzzing, grinding - no response whatsoever.
I researched about 7 months worth of posts re the convertible top here, with no situations like mine. The nearest dealer is about 2 hours away, so I want to eliminate any "simple" fixes I can, before resorting to their expensive expertise. I'm handy with tools, but I don't want to buy parts aimlessly hoping to fix the problem.
Suggestions?
