When mine failed, it did cause an excessively rich mixture and poor driveability. It didn't fail completely open or closed (the impedence changed when I set it on a heat register in the house), and I didn't think to compare the resistance to the new one, but the car ran so rich it fouled out the spark plugs in seconds and it would barely idle, let alone run. My car was producing OBD II codes for rich mixture and random/multiple cylinder misfires. I can't remember if an O2 sensor code came out or not. I was amazed that such a little part could cripple the whole car. Since the part's only $30 and available locally at Napa, it's definitely something to replace.
