hi folks,

i'm writing to tell you that my beautiful 900sc (only 73k miles) is now no more. i have written bout this car over the years, so i thought i should write one final note. on july 28, after arriving at my place of work, i got my things out of my car, and as i turned to lock the doors, i smelled a rather noxious smell. i looked around, thinking it was coming from somewhere nearby, to see black smoke coming out from my car's hood. i was rather stunned, and i RAN quickly in to my shop, dropped off my things and told my staff i thought my car was on fire. two of the guys came out and we tried to put out the fire, but the flames came up pretty quickly and i was more afraid for their safety than anything. my business partner called 9-1-1 and the firemen came. after trying to raise the hood, they couldn't, so they literally bashed the hood in with a sledge hammer (that was painful to watch). the fire was eventually put out, but my car was, by this time, a total loss. i have babied and loved this car, but it was a troubled one from the start. i have NO idea what caused the fire (i had driven only 2 miles from my house to work), for there was no advance warning. i'm grateful it didn't start till i had gotten out of the car, and i'm also thankful it didn't happen after parking it in a garage or something, or happen as i was driving down an interstate in rush-hour traffic.

i'm still stunned, and still missing my beautiful Saab. it got a new engine in 2000 (paid for by Saab because it threw a rod and SHOULDN'T have at 38k or so miles--all maintenance was being performed on time), and in 2002 it got a pretty much NEW body, new top and liner (after i was hit by a pickup truck).

so....it was very new looking, and i had hoped to drive it for several more years.

now, i am waiting on the insurance folks to make an offer of settlement, and i'm trying to decide what to buy next. i have a rental car that i will be able to keep through NEXT week, and then i have to turn it in. (my insurance company is more generous than some re: the rental car. when the settlement offer is made, i have five days more to keep the car. doesn't matter if i ACCEPT the offer or not. as soon as it's made, i have five more days).

i'm about to turn in the power of attorney letter and the notorized odometer reading, along with info on the body work done in 2002 (there was no frame damage) and the new engine in 2000.

all my friends are hoping (well, most of them) that i will buy something OTHER than a Saab, but i'm not sure i can do that. i have driven the same Saab for 11 years, and i'm just a Saab person.

if any of you have advice on the best late-model used saab to buy (or avoid), i would appreciate it.

mine was a 5-speed and i'm open to another one, or an automatic, if they're better in the long run.

i'm thinking 2002 or 2003 (9-3 convertible or hardtop), just so you know.
i'm not very fond of the new 9-3 looks (I do like the 2006 9-5 sport combi, but i cannot AFFORD to buy a new Saab). i like the new convertible ok, too, but again, i can't afford to shell out the bucks for a brand new car.

my 1995 900SC was my only new car ever, and it was the most troublesome.
i think i'll stick to late model cars from now on.

if you think certified is the way to go, i'd appreciate your thoughts on that too.

i want a saab to drive for 10 years, at least.

thanks much for your time (if you've made it this far).
