It was a saab part from eeuroparts, and I did disconnet the starter and alternator. It looks like there is still one more connection? I could not "yank" it out, it's still attached to something. I can't explain how it would still be live when disconnected unless there is a third connection somewhere. I suppose maybe one of the loose ends was touching something when I pushed it out of the way.
Anyhoo, the obvious (although not apparent) solution was to clip off the terminal on the cable where it was corroded, strip the cable an inch or so past the corrosion, and at Murray's they sell DIY terminals for $2.50 where you can bolt it on to the cables. Worked fine.
2 hours on my back trying to get to those two bolts, wasted! it was a ten minute fix
