... driving my wife's 9000 Turbo, suddenly the car felt like it was running on 2 or 3 cylindars. It had a tremendous loss of power and was running really rough. Given that no smoke was pouring out, and the engine wasn't making any horrible noises that would be associated with a catastrophic engine failure, I made the assumption that it was the DIC. I bought another one, replaced it, and all was well. After the replacement, I pulled apart the old one and, sure enough, one of the coil packs had no oil in it and one of the others was nearly empty. The oil, if I understand it correctly, serves as an insulator as well as to help keep the coils cool during operation. With no oil, that coil (and, likely, its associated electronics) fried itself.
I had a little warning about the failure, but, often a DIC will fail and the car will just stall right where you are and won't restart. This kind of failure was a contributing factor to the NHTSA compelling Saab to issue a recall, IIRC.
