My 2000 9-3 just had the same problem at 90k. A/C clutch rattled really bad at idle. Luckily the A/C clutch is seperate from the compressor and can be replaced by a skilled shop in under an hour. The bad thing is that the saab clutch is close to $500. Could probably find a used one for $100-$200, but then you run the risk of not knowing how good that unit is. All told it is around a $600 repair and really the only solution to the problem. You really need to get this taken care of quick. If the clutch seizes up you can roast the compressor and do some serious damage. Even leaving the system disengaged on ECON won't stop a bad clutch from seizing.
The way I understand it is the saab a/c system runs year round hot or cold to remove humidity unless it is set to ECON. I would think this would put more hours on the a/c unit than a regular cars system. Since this part seems to go on a lot of 903's I wish it was a cheaper repair.
hope this helps
