One item to note is that the NG900/9-3 oil drain plug is designed to fail first. That is that the oil drain plug is made of a soft steel and the head is purposely small (13mm) so that it will round over easily. The original classic Saab oil drain plug had something like a 19mm head that invited over-torquing. The newer 13mm head size superseded the larger head size and was Saab's response to cracked aluminum oil pans.
The Saab oil plug uses an annealed copper sealing washer, and only requires a low tightening torque of 18-20 lb-ft. The idea is to protect the more fragile aluminum oil pan from damage by having the oil drain plug head strip if over torqued. The design works as intended most of the time. However, as you have learned it does create a bit of a problem removing the damaged oil drain plug.
