I had the exact same issue....started in the spring with new struts. Afer a while the creaking began. The dealer (who has always done right by me) saw that the aluminum isolator washers that rest on the bottom of the strut perch looked deformed. They had re-used the original ones when they replaced the struts because they looked fine. Now, they were all torn up....why?....we all scratched our heads. They put new isolator washers on each strut perch (where the bottom of the spring rests) and everything was ok for a few months. Then the creaking returned, first on one side and then on the other. I brought it in just two weeks ago, with the service manager and three techs looking the front end over while it was up on the rack. The service manager was moving things around and a tech had a stethoscope on every part. Then, after not hearing anything, one of the techs grabbed the spring and was able to rotate it within the strut by hand. He said that even though the suspension was un-weighted from being on the rack, the spring should still have enough tension not to be able to turn within the strut housing (they did re-use the original springs back in March since they seemed to be ok). They ordered new springs and the problem was solved. The old springs twisting and rotating is also what deformed my strut isolator washers. If this is your problem, your springs are rotating ever so slowly within the strut.....that could be the creaking sound you hear. Good luck.
Steve
