Manual air dist fix and other delights (long)

Earlier this year the air distribution control on my base 00 9-3 had finally gotten so stiff that I broke the knob off. So when I took the car into the dealer for scheduled maintenance, I was figuring on major time and materials.
The service manager smiled and said there was something he could try. And it worked, for a charge of $49 in labor and $10 to replace the knob. There's a place in the HAVC control unit where you can drive in a screw to relieve the pressure on the drum.
On the same visit, I asked them to look at the bad rattle on the passenger side that had been driving me nuts since I bought the car three years ago (off-lease and not from a Saab dealer). It sounded like it was coming from the B pillar or the sunroof. Two techs took the car out to listen for the noise. They found that the honeycombing between the two compression plates behind the passenger assist handle had failed (or something like that). Fixed for $42 -- I would've paid hundreds to be rid of this, and I told them so.
I also had them drop the pan, at my expense, to see if I should be worried about sludge. No problem, and they said I have a really clean and tight engine. Which is good news since I like this car so much that I'm planning to stage it up.
Sorry run to on so, but such a great dealer deserves praise. They're a good part of why I'm so happy to have joined the Saab community.
