The cable have probably broken as in the picture and if so, you need to replace it.
What I do nowadays is to install a metal washer between the end of that plastic disc and inside the rubber grommet.
I use one of those double thick washers that are used on the exhaust manifold studs and cut a groove through it so that I can place it over the cable and insert it into the rubber grommet.
That washer will help take up a void that is created by bad engineering and prolong the life of the cable sheating, at least for this type of breakage.
