Convertible top motor failure/Saab story

I bought a 1996 900S convertible with 91K in June. Mechanically it checked out fine, the top was in excellent condition, and the top motors had been replaced the year before (but actually less than 2000 miles before). I have been driving my Saab happily for two months (most of the time with top down, even overnight with car cover or garage) and operated the top maybe a dozen times. Then, two months into "saabdom" the top fails.
The diagnosis of the local dealer is that at least one of the motors has failed and probably the ECM as well due to a short (a mislaid wiring harness). I am trying to get the dealer that did the original fix to cover the more than $5000 bill but I may not win that battle. I clearly do not have the $5000 and the best that an indie shop can do (assuming the two motors have failed ) is $3200. I have heard, however, that the top can be operated manually (albeit with some wrestling) but the top needs to be disconnected from the car control system. Has anyone else heard this?
Other wise I have an expensive rag top sedan.
