99-02 9-3s, "OG9-3"s of the NG900/OG9-3 family, old generation 9-3s, are all good. Nothing that pops out year specific. SID pixels go out, manual HVAC controls on the non-SE or non-premium package cars stiffen and the internal heater box needs replacing in some, otherwise pretty solid. Bulletproof, and darn decent, automatic trannies, good clutches and stick shifts.
One way to avoid the stiff HVAC manual controls is to consider an SE or premium package car, plus you get all the nice premium package stuff.
A good local independent Saab mechanic will do wonders to enhance your ownership experience. Lotsa' car for the money, fast, practical too.
