Sounds like SM's are the place to start. I've never DIY'd them, doesn't look too bad but you'll need to get a spring compressor (pretty sure Murphy's auto parts will loan you one).
Wouldn't necessarily knock in a turn but looseness might show up as a vibration (harmonics and stuff), the last time one of mine went I noticed vibration on high speed sweepers on the highway.
