Sluggish throttle response Posted by Peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Hello,
Driveability issues aren't my strong point, so I'm asking the board...
97 900set auto, 89k miles. Throttle response has always been pretty swift, even with the turbo spool up. But since this summer, my throttle response has been pretty sluggish. When I hit the pedal, rpm's will go up, but very little happens unless I keep my foot in it.
When I'm in 3rd or 4th gear, I really need to give it the boot to get to kick down. Haven't got a CEL. I'm hitting the red on the turbo gauge, so I don't think it's a turbo issue. Gas mileage hasn't changed; maye a little worse but i think it's from stomping on the pedal so much! I usually run 89 octane.
I replaced the plugs at 80k and ran Techron through a month ago. New air filter also at 80k. I also replaced the A/T range switch this summer.
My thoughts on easy fixes: Clean throttle body/check throttle operation, blow out the air filter and change the plugs. I gapped the plugs and they were only off a little bit (uniformly .45-47 instead of the recommended .39).
Any other relatively simple fixes? I saw a post in the archives from REM in which he polished/ported the TB, but that sounds a bit extreme. I also found something from Taliaferro Saab about resettiing the computer by accelerating hard uphill just before kickdown...
Thanks in advance. I'll get a chance to work on the car next wed. or thurs.
