I have been experiencing a mystery smell for about two weeks now: after every drive, long or short, there is a faint smell like hot melting plastic coming from the engine compartment. One week into this, I checked undermeath the car and found congealed drips of a white-ish cheesy plastic on the bottom of the catalytic box, as if someone put a chunk of glue gun material up there to melt. I scraped this off the bottom, but am still getting the smell . . . so what is going on up top? (can't get under the car right now)
I saw post re: some sensor or switch that could be leaking oil on top -- where is it and if source how to fix? Also, this smell started about the same time I removed driver's seat and console to replace my iginition switch -- is there a heat shield above cat that would keep anything dislodged from falling on it and baking, or would something bake and melt up there too? Any other suspected sources?
