1st lesson, lotsa' folks make the same mistake intially, all 9-3s are not the same. They redid them in 2003 ('cept the convertibles weren't redone until 2004) and the 2003's and up through the current 2007 model year are designated 9-3SS the "SS" standing for sport sedan. And that's this bulletin board, the wrong one for a 1999 9-3, but that's no biggee because someone will switch it (us, my post too) over to the NG900/OG9-3 BB.
The 9-3's that were made from 1999 though 2002 are now called OG9-3's the "OG" stands for old generation. These are the hatchback cars (and the verts), the 2003 and up 9-3SS' didn't come in hatchback anymore. The OG9-3's are pretty much the same car as NG900's, "New Generation", made from 1994 to 1998. When Saab switched bodystyles in 1994 (verts again were a year behind) they still called them 900's so 1979 to 1993 900's are now called Classic 900's or C900's and 94-98 are now NG900's.
Got all that? It ain't easy.
1999, the first year for the new 9-3 designation (only subsequently relegated to OG9-3 status when the all new 2003 9-3SS came out) is a very good car. The same body or sheet metal as the the 94-98 NG900's, but only with turbo fours and with the addition of side air-bags and some subtle outside changes like changing the rear lights and where the license plate fits. Fun cars, very zippy because of the turbo, even the automatics, incredibly practical with the hatch, very sturdy and safe, and very unique.
I'd certainly insist that you take any prospective purchase to a good local Saab independent mechanic for an inspection.
Welcome Marie.
