I'm suspicious because moving the wires seemed to solve the problem. I'd be inclined to check again. There's a thick bundle of wires that runs up behind the radio and chafes against a sharp metal angle bracket. Mine was easy to find, because it was sending smoke (and flame!) signals, but I imagine that absent any flames you may have to look very closely at those wires to see the wear. Mine had a catastrophic failure, which seems to be unusual, so I'm a little gun shy when it comes to electrical gremlins in the dash, but still. You may want to give it a real good going over, and pad that section of the bracket so it can't abrade the wires.
