As the story goes, my turbo has been leaking oil for the past six months, recently got really bad and she was in need of an inspection sticker. I had been in fear of having it inspected for if it sat to long, she would start smoking out the exhaust. I was losing a lot of oil, you could smell it.
Purchased a rebuild kit from saabperformanceparts, this was a waste of time. It said on there website no special tools needed, but you will. You really need to find a good pair of snap ring pliers, not something you find in a store. Their directions were lacking and could have been a little more, they were just very general. Disassemble of the turbo took a lot of time. Also found that the exhaust was leaking out where the waste gate actuator handle left the turbine housing. After all the time spent, when I finally arrived at the last step of assembly of the exhaust turbine housing. Found turbine hitting in housing. Upon disassemble a recently replaced retaining ring broke and all my time was wasted for finding another retaining ring was impossible with out buying anther rebuild kit. I do blame the turbine interference on the rebuild kit.
Purchase a used turbo with a six month warranty from goldwing saab and had it shipped over night to my house. It seemed to be in almost new condition. Spent a lot of time getting the turbo cooling line that connects to the engine block installed, very little room. But car is running and the boost is better than ever and no more smoke screen.
