1) You can get antisqueal goo for the pads, put it on the steel backing plates. Some of that's like grease, other type is like rubbery glue. Sometimes it can be improved by cleaning everything up. But once you remove the pads for either of those reasons, it seems silly to put the old ones back in.
2) Your shift knob presses straight onto the shaft. It doesn't screw on like 99.99% of the other cars in the world. I've never seen a 'generic' knob that fits. But I've seen fancy shift knobs specially for Saab. Check the sponsors list for places like eEuroparts.com, State of Nine, or places like that.
