A couple of things:
First, I suspect the repair will cost considerably more than the price of the filter kit. The fact it drives backwards seems to indicate a problem with the forward friction plates.
Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on the filter kit. You will probably need an overhaul which will necessitate a new filter kit.
Second, I might as well say this before someone else, you realize this board is for 79-93 (94 vert)? Perhaps you may find a better answer to your question on the NG board.
Unless of course you are a bad typist and your car is an 87 in which case, item two above doesn't apply.
I hope you get your problems resolved. From what I've learned from reading various posts, slow, hesistant shifting seems to be more of an indication of a filter change (or cleaning) rather than little movement in drive.
