Rural massachusetts has some of the most "american dream" striving people I can imagine... so I don't know where the idea that they are too modest to drive an MB came from, the further east in the state you go the worse it gets too. Everyone wants a brand new SUV, even if they are single, without children, or drive only a mile at a time. I feel sometimes like the only person with a car in my rural town. Everyone around here gives their aging SAABs and Volvos to their kids. I was an example of that for a while as well, driving my parents old SAABs. When I drive into boston everyone is either ridiculously rich and flaunting it, or pretending to be by spending their entire income on a Toyota Supra or something.
as for the MB vs SAAB, compare prices/power between SAAB/volvo/bmw/MB and you'll find saab fares quite well, plus... if you've driven one you know the feeling. They have personality.
