Can you back-pin the connector to the front sensor? Or maybe rig jumpers so you can check it again, while it's plugged in.
What happens, is the ECU controls fuel based (partly) on the front O2 sensor. With the sensor unplugged, the control loop is open. The ECU goes rich to be safe. That's why you see the 'zero' signal.
When you measured the rear sensor, I bet the front one was plugged in, so the ECU was operating in closed-loop.
It's always possible for contaminants to destroy the sensor (especially silicone). I bet they're fairly robust to voltage shocks, but like you say it's 85k miles old... And those codes can be caused by a bad sensor.
