Intermittent Violent Steering Shimmy - Resolved (long)

All,
I wanted to share this recent experience:
A few months back my wife's 1999 9-3 convertible (130K) developed a violent shimmy at highway speed. It was so violent that it would nearly rip the steering wheel from your hands. It didn't occur all the time and didn't occur at one specific speed. Once it started the only way to stop the shake was to slow down. Slowing down briefly INCREASED the intensity of the shaking but then it would fade. Also, when traveling at any speed, pressing on the accelerator would pull the car to the left and releasing accelerator would pull the car right.
She replaced worn front tires (tire guy swore the fronts were worn and out of balance/out of round) and had all four wheels rebalanced. Result was $200 less in the pocket and still violent shimmy.
Took it to Embarcadero Automotive (indie) in San Francisco. They found that a slow leak in the steering rack seals had allowed PS fluid to seep onto the two rubber bushings where the tie rods attach to the steering rack. Over time those bushings had softened to the consistency of jello and allowed a huge amount of play in the steering. HOWEVER, this play was masked by the fact that the worn rack seals caused the steeing to "feel" tighter. From the wheel, you could only feel the play when the violent oscillation started.
So we had the rack and tie rods replaced at a cost of $1000 and the car drives like it was new.
Hope this info may be of use to someone!!
Cheers!
