I don't know the non-turbo NGK plug number.
When the plug electrode insulator becomes black, that soot can conduct the spark so that it does not jump to the ground electrode. At lower manifold pressures, things can seem normal, but when you get on the throttle and the manifold pressure and cylinder pressures go up, the resistance of the electrode air gap can exceed the resistance of the soot and the spark tracks through the soot (path of least resistance). If you look carefully at the electrode, you can see tiny lines in the soot that almost appear to be cracks.
As air pressure is increased, the breakdown voltage of a spark gap increases. That is why turbo engines have exotic ignition systems. Many designs will resort to smaller gaps.
