has a weak link built in, the tensioner pully bearing dries out and dies, screwing up the belt and making you a pedestrian. Parts are cheap, 40 bucks each for belt and tensioner pully. Not a bad job for DIY a
saab friendly mechanic would charge maybe an hour labor. While he (or you) is under the engine I would test spin the alternator and see if it makes any noise. OK, it's a rough test but its a test. Replace if noisy bearing, this job is almost thousand bucks at the dealer, 300 part and plenty of labor, you might want to pre-emptively change, or at least inspect the alternator brushes (wear item, 60 bucks) and replace if marginal. I did the short belt mod (see link) which eliminates one potential troublespot bearing entirely using a goodyear gatorback belt, very happy after 10,000 miles,
Good luck,
John
