I actually still think my problem is still alignment-related. Either a vertical engine/linkage alignment problem due to new mounts, like you suggest, or related to how I reinstalled my subframe. I forgot to mark the subframe before removing, though I could clearly see the outline in the road grime when I reinstalled. I'm sure if I was even off a 1/8" it could be significant. So that would be my first suggestion: MARK YOUR SUBFRAME!

I did the whole job on jacks in my garage. I got all 4 wheels as high as I could and added 2 jacks under front frame (where subframe bolts up). The car really can wobble when you're pushing and pulling on the motor and tranny!

I was lucky enough to borrow an engine hoist from a friend's dad (cost me a round of golf). This really sped things up.

A neighbor helped me with the tranny removal, which was a bitch. We actually ended up using a pry-bar and lever once everything was unbolted. I used two floor jacks and misc lumber to lower tranny to the ground. This is also where the hoist comes in handy; you can basically lower the engine so the tranny is almost on the ground when it comes free. The biggest pain I had was in the passenger drive shaft removal. This shaft is in two parts with a cast-aluminum support that also doubles as the lower bracket for the alternator and pulleys. I mangled the 10mm allen bolt that holds this whole assembly together and ended up having to take out the entire alternator and pulley assemblies along with the drive shaft.

After replacing the clutch, the tranny went right back in with no problem. Reassembly was also a snap (except for getting that driveshaft back in).

Another thing that made the job easier was that I was doing the struts and all the front suspension bushings. I had the entire strut assembly out on both sides. Empty wheel wells made the tranny and driveshaft removals much easier.

Good Luck!
