My '00 9-3 SE has a very slow coolant leak; about 3-4 months for the resevoir level to drop from Max to Min. The leak seems to be slowly increasing over time (a couple of years ago I had to top up every six months). On cold start there is sometimes, but not always, a coolant odor in the cabin for a few seconds.

I have examined some (but not all) of the hose connections inside the engine compartment and see no sign of dried coolant.

Does this sound like a heater core leak? Could it be the o-rings? The core itself seems more likely given the coolant smell at startup.

If the core is leaking, is there any remedy other than replacing it?

By the way, I found Giovanni's excellent heater core R&R steps here (for an NR900 but I suspect that the OG9-3 will be similar):
