Here's the deal: She's been using up antifreeze more & more. At first, it was about a cup every few days. Now it empties the overflow container after about 5 - 10 miles.

Took it to the mechanic & he suggested "Stop Leak" (Peppery looking crap), which, depending on whether you get the powder version or the goopy liquid, is supposed to stop leaks, etc.

Now here it is the day after and I drove it about 2.5 miles and noticed the same old leak coming from what appears to be the head gasket (nothing new) - but still not 100% sure. This time, when I checked the oil dipstick, the color on the stick looked like brown gravy & the sound echoing from the cavernous tube where the dipstick goes sounded unfamiliar - like a gurgled, grinding effect, rather than a smooth, machine-like rapidity.

I had already supposed I had a tiny leak from a head gasket before, but was hoping the stop-leak would alleviate it enough to trade in to a dealer. Yes, that's rather dishonest, but I cannot afford yet another $1000 repair bill for a car that's barely worth twice that. I'm poor & am upside down on the car. We still owe 2k & I fear I hear the fat lady clearing her voice....
