Another Sob Saab Story. My car is a 1995 900SE V6 convertible with 145K miles. So based upon what Anders said last time I will try and insure that I get all the info out at once. On the last oil change I noted oil on the bottom of the pan. I thought it to be a leaking oil drain plug so I snugged it down after draining. I checked the oil the other day and noted it was low so I added enough to top it off, ~1/2 of a quart. Last night I stooped at the bottom of the hill to get something at the local gas station. When I started the car a lot of noise was coming from the engine compartment, Someone asked if it was a diesel. Drove home and no change in the noise level. Some loss of power was noted. Listened to the engine with a screwdriver and in the area of #1 Cyl it appears that there is some clinking, metal to metal noise, not good I know. I also noted that the timing belt cover gasket was blown out in the area of the front most cam. So here are my thought, I think that the exhaust valve seal or gasket, one of them, on Number one cylinder has let go and is allowing gas into the valve area which in turn blew out the camshaft seal and blew out the timing belt cover seal. Now after having the rear head replaced just last month and the fact that I have rebuilt a couple of engines in my past I am looking to tear this thing apart myself. I am looking for a book to help guide me through this process. I am not against taking the engine and transmission out but know that the books help in this matter. Also do you have to get new head bolts or can you reuse the old ones?
Any help or direction will be appreciated. This is not a rush job as I have a Volvo 850 wagon to drive while I do the work. Also a heated garage, seeing as I live in the northeast and it is winter time.
