oil change method

I bought a 6 case of Mobil1 0w-40 at Advance Auto Parts the other day (it was on sale, yay!), and the guy behind the counter mentioned "that's 3 oil changes there..."...and I'm like "what?" He explained that with fully synthetic oil changes, the "proper" way to change the oil is, every 5k mi, pull the filter, put a new one in, top off the engine with a qt or whatever it needs, and drive on. Do that 4 times (20k mi) and then actually drain all the oil like a regualar oil change.
Not that I'm taking the advice of an Advance employee over this board, I just wanted to see what you all had to think about that :) I'm going to continue to do a "full" oil change every 5k anyway.
