I am at the great decision point to start fixing or throw in the towel. I know of a couple problems, but I think it's fairly possible that there are more problems. Here is a quick run down:
1997, 900s, n/a, 173k miles
1. Distributor is leaking oil inside the cap. Do I need to replace just the $22 Distributor cap, or the cap with the rotor, or the complete ignition distributor assembly? It seems this is a common problem, but it isn't clear to me from previous threads what all has to be replaced. Oil is not severally leaking as it hasn't required me to put oil in the car. It does look like it is on many parts.
2. Radiator hose is covered with oil from the leak, as well as all the hoses/cables in that area.
3. Coolent is low, and I did see some white smoke when stopped on two occasions, although not resently. If it is a heater core problem (what a couple threads on here lead me to, that's not good), that sounds expensive! The temp gauge just barely gets out of the blue area while on the highway, but was right in the middle while driving around town?!?. Blows warm/hot air just fine, and the hose warms with the block when starting cold.
4. Need to replace front/rear brakes and possibility rotators.
5. Clutch will need to be replace soon, too.
I was planning to do the brakes and clutch over the holidays, but decided to hold off to make sure I don't put a bunch of money into the car and have a major problem from the oil leak(s). I did a short video of the area, as well took a couple photos to get some options from the experts here. I didn't really have anywhere to put them, so I put them on my 'myspace' site.
