...and anniversary "turbo" embossing on the seats (2002 only). These things, however minor, influenced my decision to buy a 2002 9-3 versus a 2001. Mike Lynch is right, mechanical differences between these 3 years are almost negligible, especially between 2002 and 2003.

However, correct me if I am wrong, but I also think some elements of the ignition system and throttle body were slightly upgraded for 2002. And the "color" (more accurately color cast or hue) of the speedometer lighting was also very slightly, repeat, VERY slightly, altered for 2002 to be exactly the same as the revised 9-5. (Most people can't even see the difference so don't flame me if you don't believe me! The colors are just a little brighter. I promise!)

Also, Saab switched over to the new Saab logo (abandoning the Saab Scania interlocking ring logo) in August 2001. Some 2001 cars have the new badging, some old.

All of these things are minor and individually almost meaningless, but in sum, I would advise a 2002 over 2001. On a purely aesthetic level, for example, I prefer the vinyl (faux leather) door inserts starting in 2002 versus the cheap velour from prior years. Or for instance the increased tire size series in 2002, from 50 to 55. Adds extra curb protection and more sidewall support for a smoother ride and better performance.

Beyond the fact that 2002 saw an abandonment of the base (non-SE) trim level, I don't remember the differences in terms of options and packages... Mike Lynch is the expert there.
