I had a '96 900S and presently drive an '02 9-3 (not a convertable). The 9-3, while seemingly very similar to the 900, performs a million time better (okay, maybe a thousand times).
I think all the '02s came with the turbo which by itself is a big difference. In addition, the handling is much better, especially with the SE package. Make sure the DI recall was done and there are no sludge issues. My '02 has been very reliable (just turned 40k), other than the DI dying before the recall.
