dropping it out completely - the subframe bolts on driver's side removed so it hung down some, then the trans. rested on it enough that full access of the clutch area was possible. Didn't do the flywheel since it was fine surface wise and the seal showed no signs of leaking like expected (neither do the shaft seals)- they may be leaking now but I doubt it. Then I just lifted the trans. about a foot into place to put it back together.
BTW my trans. has always made noise on deceleration in 5th gear - I have since read that is caused by the end bearing and is just noisy but no problem. 39k miles later the noise is the same and nothing has changed so I believe the diagnosis. If at 200k miles it goes out that that's pretty good in my book - time to do the engine (rescore the walls) at that time anyway!
