Check Engine and Check Gearbox light on

This morning when I turned my (1997 900s automatic hatchback) car on, the check engine and check gearbox lights came on. I had driven about 20 feet, and immediately pulled over, turned the car off, then back on - lights stayed on.
As I was worried about doing any damage, I had a co-worker bring me into the office and left the car parked. After doing some homework on the site, a few people mentioned they had this problem in cold weather. I live in LA, and its been unusually cold, but only dips to about 30 degrees (not cold comparatively). Could this still be the cause? The car had been parked overnight both Saturday and Sunday - during the day on Saturday I drove around town with no issues.
The car went from D to P to R with no problems, the short amount I drove it felt fine. I just got very nervous driving the car any distance as I was worried about doing any damage.
Are there any suggestions as to trying anything to see if I can tell if this is just a cold weather issue or something more serious before I take it in tomorrow to the Saab mechanic?
If it is just the cold weather, do I just let the car sit and warm up?
