Same thing happened twice on 2 different 94-02 saabs - first the thermostat starts sticking open - overcools - then finally it sticks shut, and then of course your SOL if you're driving it -
they are pretty easy to get to so do it ASAP - especially on a more sensitive engine like the Viggen's -
Remove the intercooler pipe, then the radiator upper hose, then make sure everything around is out of the way - you have to unbolt the rear mount that supports the O2 and crank wire plugs (small metal), then you should be able to get to the 2 bolts that hold the cap on (rounded) just pull out -
make sure you use the right size gasket (new!) - if it's too big it will squish out and leak after you put it together - pretty hard to use one too small as you won't be able to get it around the thermostat (the seal goes on the thermostat ring, then the thermo. sits in vertically, then the housing holds it in) -
