as the motor ages the current draw typically increases. At the same time, the push-on connections on the leads loosen with vibration and corrode, increasing the resistance across the connection. As an illustrative aside, aluminum wiring use was abandoned in homes becuse of two undesireable properties of aluminum (at least for this application); it "cold-flows", that is it slowly creeps out from under the fastener in response to the downward pressure of the fastening screw on devices like switches and outlets, resulting in a poor connection and the fact that the resistivity of aluminum oxide is 1,000,000 times greater than that of aluminum. More current through higher resistance can easily generate heat at the connection sufficient to melt solder, let alone plastic and even ignite things (like the Beverly Hills Supper Club). There will be some temperature dependence associated with the resistance across the connection, hence the relationship between the ambient temp at startup and the smell. And "Yes", this can easily cause a complete loss of current to the fan.
