2000 9-3 major problem

Purchased my 2000 9-3 Convertible CPO in July 2003 with only 30K miles. Have taken to Saab dealer for each scheduled service, with 60K performed last summer (around when my CPO warranty expired). Brought to dealer when check engine light came on at 70K and they are telling me that it is "undrivable" - timing and other chains are about to go and will cost $3500 to repair. I brought it in to a local shop for a second opinion, and they agreed. I am at a loss - is this not something that should have been checked/identified during the 60K mile service when my car was still under warranty??? Any suggestions on what to do next?
